Bookmans community events uncertain following layoff of marketing coordinator

Bookmans Flagstaff Entertainment Exchange, a beloved local bookstore known for its diverse calendar of community events, recently made sudden staffing cuts that have led to the cancellation of numerous activities. The layoff of its marketing and events coordinator has resulted in the abrupt suspension of various regularly scheduled events, including book clubs, author readings, and craft workshops.

The company explained that these changes, though difficult, are necessary measures taken to navigate the current economic climate. A statement from Bookmans corporate office expressed gratitude to the community for its continued support, acknowledging that the company has been forced to “restrategize, reorganize and refocus.”

Former employees have confirmed that the sudden changes have created a void for the local community and led to unclear communication around what events are still going on. Author Katie King commented that such community-driven series’ disappearance is a significant loss not only for individuals like her but also for the community at large.

It’s worth noting that Bookmans’ core values, as listed on their website, include a strong commitment to being a positive influence and integral part of the communities they serve. The Bookmans Flagstaff location was named the ‘Best Bookstore’ by locals in the Arizona Daily Suns’ annual ‘Best of Flag’ voting just last month.

A big part of the bookstore’s appeal, as highlighted by its now-former marketing and events coordinator, Margarita Cruz, was the store’s role as a free, public gathering place. Cruz fondly remembered the community interaction, stating that she loved meeting strangers who soon became friends at the various events the bookstore hosted.
