What Does a Chief AI Officer Look Like in Marketing?

The Chief AI Officer (CAIO) role is touted as one of the hottest emerging positions, with its influence expected to permeate across multiple industries, especially marketing. Major companies like UnitedHealth, Deloitte, and Intel have already filled this role. The U.S government has also demonstrated its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) incorporation, appointing its first-ever CAIO.

The CAIO serves as a liaison among various departments such as HR, marketing, sales, and product development. They will primarily collaborate with the marketing team, as marketing is susceptible to swift AI tool influence due to its internal and external content generation. The CAIO may also liaise with HR and sales departments, influencing job descriptions, posting material to internal websites, and overseeing employee manuals and onboarding materials.

Next, the CAIO is tasked with leading experimentation and deployment within the organization. This necessitates forming and maintaining connections with various AI tools, determining how and where they should be deployed, and prioritizing, streamlining, and guiding the experimentation process.

Additionally, the CAIO must understand their organization’s intricacies. This includes possessing a keen sense of curiosity, a passion for innovation, and organizational psychology knowledge. Notably, they do not need to know how neural networks or large language models are written, opening the position to more diverse applicants.

The CAIO should also establish the success standards, including comparing the output quality before and after AI deployment within each department, and reevaluating current practices.

Contrary to traditional positions, the CAIO role is predicted to become obsolete soon. As AI incorporation becomes the norm rather than the exception, there won’t be a distinction between the traditional business processes and those with AI contributions. However, the CAIO role is still essential in this transitional era.
